when your style changes....

I got married almost 8 years ago. Let's just say my style has changed quite a bit since then. I'm not just talking about my personal style (as that has seen a lot of change as well) but I'm talking more about my home decor style (I suppose that is personal style?).

When I got married I registered for basic items, a bit more on the neutral side as we were planning on living in a nice apartment for the first year. I did however, adore all things Palm Trees and the Tuscan style that came along with them. I have a giant Palm Tree picture in my living room, palm tree pillows (see example below), palm tree candle stick holders and palm tree tins that are on my mantle. I loved palm trees. I still do, but I'm over that style. Like, way over. (it doesn't help our couch is a hand-me-down and the style just makes me cringe. We are saving up for a purchase of a new neutral colored couch...seems like saving up for big ticket items take a long time when you have other necessities to pay for!)

Naturally I have outgrown my love for Palm Trees, my love for Tuscan style and even some of the American Colonial style that also fills my home. I would say most of things I own have never truly been my style. I got a lot of hand-me-down decorations, coffee table, tables/chairs, dressers, etc. so I've had to go with the flow and make things work. (hey we were 21 & 20 when we got married, both lived at home up till that point and didn't have much to call our own!)

So what am I trying to say? What do you do when your style completely changes?

For me, I am going to start small. Garage Sale. I have already picked out items I'm going to sell and whatever doesn't sell, I will donate. I realize my home is going to be bare for awhile while I plan and design what I am really feeling at the moment.

I have realized that I have always adored vintage items, even as a child (my love of old movies has helped this love of vintage decor/clothing). Thankfully, this type of vintage feel is back in a big way. I love the 40s and 50s and even 70s, the bright colors, even pastel colors. I just love the cozy, fun feel to it all. It seems all so happy. What more does a person want then a happy home?

So farewell old style and hello to the possibility of something new and fresh that is more me!

As you can see from just a few pictures my style is a bit all over the place at the moment, more 40s/50s vibe and bright to a more 30s/40s light, pastel type of feel to everything. I'm still thinking and creating and I think I can have all these styles incorporated into one house, after all I have lots of rooms and lots of ideas! It's time to start putting all my thoughts into action!

  1. Hey,
One of the blogs I sent you (House of Smiths) goes through this exact same issue. Shelly has only been blogging a little over a year (or two?), and if you back-date to the beginning, you'll see that her whole purpose for starting the blog revolved around the fact that she wanted to completely transform her house from a country/tuscan style, to a more modern version of a cottage-like style. She changed everything. I found it interesting to see how she worked in the changes for not a lot of money. Fun times. :)
